CoCreative Art Educational Philosophy

Educational Philosophy Statement

I believe that education is most powerful when it nurtures the whole human being—heart, mind, body, and soul. As an art educator, my role is not only to teach technique and visual literacy but to create an emotionally safe space where students can discover who they are, what they care about, and how they connect to others. Art is the vehicle I use to teach students how to communicate, collaborate, and care.

My educational philosophy is rooted in the belief that true learning emerges from intrinsic motivation, not external rewards or punishments. I have witnessed firsthand how systems of shame, blame, and fame disconnect students from their inner compass and turn learning into a performance. In contrast, when students are encouraged to reflect on their own values, express themselves authentically, and contribute to a community of mutual respect, they become deeply engaged and self-directed.

I believe the classroom should be a CoCreative space—where every student is seen as a leader in their own unique area of strength. By integrating art with communication and life skills, I guide students in cultivating emotional intelligence, empathy, and critical thinking. The Peace Bench and Friendship Circle protocols I developed offer real-world practices for conflict resolution, honest feedback, and community repair—tools they carry for life.

Rather than simply managing behavior, I focus on building trust and transforming school culture through relational teaching. I strive to embody the qualities I wish to see in my students: compassion, clarity, fairness, and creativity. When young people feel safe, heard, and valued, they rise to their highest potential—not just as students, but as caring, capable human beings. Art education, when done right, does more than prepare students to make beautiful things. It prepares them to make a beautiful world.

This wise child is asking to follow her own muse.

Especially the lyrics...

"And there are those who will tell us - what we already know

They offer us a garden - when we can already watch the flowers grow

as we listen"

Here are all the lyrics...

Listen

Listen the sun is smiling

Listen the moon she whispers

Listen the oceans calling

Calling to us Calling to us to listen

To things that aren't so loud.

Chorus: And if we look for what is wrong in anything, anything

We will find it, we will find it

And if we look for what is good in everything

We will find it, we will find it.

And there are those who will tell us what we already know

They offer us a garden

When we can already watch the flowers grow

as we listen

Listen the trees are breathing

Listen the grass is laughing

Listen the wind is calling

Calling to us

Calling to us to listen

To things that aren't so loud

Bridge: And it's always there inside us all

The way to get around that wall

Answers appear as soon as we find

This moment - is the first of its kind

Chorus: And if we look for what is wrong in anything, anything

We will find it, we will find it And if we look for what is good in everything

We will find it, we will find it.

And there are those who will tell us what we already know

They offer us a garden

When we can already watch the flowers grow

as we listen
