The 3 Layers of Imagination in SEL CoCreative Arts™
Bringing Humanities Back to Education Through Imagination, Emotional Intelligence & Creative Community-Building
At SEL CoCreative Arts™, we believe imagination is not something we do alone. It is something we grow together. In a world increasingly shaped by automation, standardized testing, and disconnection, students need more than information. They need opportunities to notice deeply, understand compassionately, imagine creatively, and contribute meaningfully.
Too often, art education unintentionally becomes an exercise in following instructions rather than developing imagination.
Yet imagination is essential to emotional intelligence, empathy, problem-solving, innovation, and community-building.
This is why we developed:
Unlike “levels,” layers work together.
Just as colors blend in a painting, these three layers of imagination support one another in helping students grow into thoughtful, creative, compassionate human beings
Pattern Recognition
“I notice.”
Students learn to see patterns, symbols, emotions, meaning, and visual relationships.
Imagination begins with noticing.
Students learn to ask:
What do I notice that others might miss?
Perspective Taking
“I understand.”
Students develop empathy by learning to see through the eyes of others.
Imagination becomes connection.
Students learn to ask:
What might life feel like for someone else?
Visionary Imagination
“I help create.”
Students move beyond imagining what could exist to learning how to bring meaningful ideas into reality together.
Through empathy, creativity, collaboration, and shared vision, students imagine better futures—and help build them together.
Students begin asking:
What kind of world are we helping create?
